Hi. My name is Adrian and I work here at Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa as part of the front office team. It's not like any city hotel because most of our guests are here for a holiday, not work. It's amazing to watch the transformation of our guests. They arrive in need of a holiday and full of stress, and by the time they depart they’re all relaxed and don't want to leave. Because of our location-where the outback meets the sea - every single day is different
7:00am I start my shift with a handover from the Night Manager who tells me about any events that occurred during the night - or issues that require follow-up. As most of our guests arrive by air, I check the flight arrival times to be prepared for them. Then it's off to a staff briefing with the dayshift team.
8:00am It’s email time! Then on the phone to talk with other properties around Broome to discuss occupancy levels. I then fill out my daily reports and statistics, check any special requests for the day and delegate tasks to other staff members.
9:00am Time for the morning management meeting where we discuss happenings around the resort and any issues that have been raised. Then it's back to the front desk to check out guests and share stories of their time spent at the resort. Often, departing guests will book their accommodation for the next year.
10:00am I get a call from a guest who is worried that there is a large green frog in their toilet. I sort that out and give the frog a better home. My next task is to ensure that all the guests have left their rooms by the checkout time. I follow up on late departures and check the status of the rooms while I’m still working on the next guests’ arrival plan.
Lunchtime I take a quick break and catch up with the other resort staff and share stories of their days off or what they have planned for their next days off.
11:00am There is a guest wandering around the resort grounds carrying a fishing rod and Esky. He looks totally lost. I help him with directions and the best times and locations for fishing. Then there is a call for a first aider to attend an incident. It's not too serious - an elderly lady has become very dehydrated because it's a very hot day.
Noon I help run the guests to the airport in our coach and then meet and greet our new guests and drive them back to the resort. We offer them a glass of champagne when they arrive and then check them in. One family's room wasn't ready - so I register their details and let them know that you don't have to wait for your room to be ready to start your holiday. I showed them our private change rooms, luggage storage, gave them a map and pointed out all of the resort's facilities, restaurants, bars and pools. They seemed happy.
2:00pm Their room is now ready - but the guests are busy enjoying the resort's facilities; the adults are having lunch and the kids are having fun in the pool so they tell me they'll be up in half an hour or so.
Oh dear! Apparently a 1 m lizard is terrorising guests in the restaurant. It's harmless so I help him out of the restaurant and back into the grounds.
3:00pm I do a spot check on the guest rooms noting all irregularities and issues and have them rectified ASAP. I get a call that a 3 foot snake is cruising through a guest area. I quickly grab the snake kit and head off in pursuit. It turns out it's a green tree snake which I have tried to catch several times in the past. He's pretty fast - but I got him this time! I return to the office and hand over to the afternoon shift Duty Manager. I run through the issues of the day, our action plan and the function which is happening that night.
4:00pm I'm told that the computer server is playing up. I have a quick look and fix the problem straight away.
5:00pm I finish up for the day and meet a couple of staff at the bar for a beer and to watch the sunset. It's been another action packed day in the wonderful world of Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa.
